Progress towards Molecular - Level Auxetic Materials
نویسنده
چکیده
Man-made and natural auxetic materials and structures exist from the molecularto the microand macroscales, and cover the major classes of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers and composites). There is now considerable interest in the development of these novel materials due to their counter-intuitive behaviour and also because of their potential in applications where the auxetic property itself, or enhancements in other properties due to a negative Poisson’s ratio, may be exploited. Enhanced properties include resistance to shear deformation, high volume/porosity change under load, -ve νxy +ve νxy

A review on auxetic structures and polymeric materials
Auxetic polymeric materials are a special kind of materials that exhibit negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) effect. They get fatter when stretched and thinner when compressed. Auxetic behavior is a scaleindependent property which can be achieved at different structural levels from molecular to macroscopic levels. The internal structure of material plays an important role in obtaining auxetic effect...
متن کاملFrom Geometric Transformations to Auxetic Metamaterials
The paper introduces a new alternative towards fabrication of auxetic metamaterials (materials with negative Poisson’s ratio) controlled by geometric transformations. These transformations are derived from the theory of small (infinitesimal) elastic deformation superimposed on finite elastic deformations. By using this theory, a cylindrical region filled with initial deformed foam is transforme...
متن کاملTuning the Performance of Metallic Auxetic Metamaterials by Using Buckling and Plasticity
Metallic auxetic metamaterials are of great potential to be used in many applications because of their superior mechanical performance to elastomer-based auxetic materials. Due to the limited knowledge on this new type of materials under large plastic deformation, the implementation of such materials in practical applications remains elusive. In contrast to the elastomer-based metamaterials, me...
متن کاملHierarchical Fibers with a Negative Poisson’s Ratio for Tougher Composites
In this paper, a new kind of hierarchical tube with a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) is proposed. The first level tube is constructed by rolling up an auxetic hexagonal honeycomb. Then, the second level tube is produced by substituting the arm of the auxetic sheet with the first level tube and rolling it up. The Nth ( ) level tube can be built recursively. Based on the Euler beam theory, the eq...
